How to Add MoMo Payments to Your App in Ghana
To add MoMo payments to an app in Ghana, your developer connects the app to a mobile money provider. This can be done directly through a network's developer platform, or through a payment gateway such as Hubtel that covers several networks with one integration. The server must confirm each payment before the app marks an order as paid, and the app must show clear messages for payments that are pending, failed or delayed.
Why mobile money matters for your app
Many Ghanaian customers prefer to pay from their phones. If your app only accepts cards, you may lose sales from people who do not have a card or do not want to use one online. Mobile money makes it easy for a customer to pay for a ticket, a delivery, a subscription or a booking without leaving the app.
The catch is that mobile money works differently from a card. The customer approves the payment on their phone, and that approval can take a few seconds or a few minutes. Your app has to wait for the answer and handle every outcome properly.
Your two main routes
Direct integration with a network
You can connect directly to a network's developer platform, such as MTN MoMo. Your developer registers for access, gets the keys needed to make requests, tests in a sandbox environment, and then requests approval to go live. This route can give you direct control, but if you want to accept payments from more than one network, each one needs its own integration.
Payment gateway
A gateway like Hubtel gives you one connection that can handle several mobile money networks and sometimes cards too. Your app talks to the gateway, and the gateway talks to the networks. This is often simpler for a small or growing business, because your developer writes the integration once and can add options later.
Neither route is automatically better. The right one depends on which customers you serve, which networks they use, how much control you want and how much work your team is willing to manage.
What your developer should build
A proper MoMo payment flow is more than a single button. In most cases it includes:
- A payment request from the app, with the customer's number and the exact amount.
- A prompt on the customer's phone asking them to approve the payment.
- A callback or webhook, where the provider tells your server whether the payment succeeded, failed or timed out.
- Order statuses such as pending, paid and failed, so your team and your customer always know where things stand.
- A record of every transaction, with a reference number that matches what the provider shows.
- Receipts sent by SMS or email, and a way to handle refunds.
- A check to compare your records with the provider's records at the end of each day or week.
Common mistakes to avoid
Several problems come up again and again when apps are built in a hurry.
- Marking an order as paid as soon as the customer taps the button. The order should only be paid after the server receives confirmation.
- Storing API keys inside the app itself. Keys should live on a secure server, where customers cannot see them.
- Forgetting timeouts. A customer may approve the payment after your app has already shown an error. Without a good system, you can end up with money taken but no order created.
- Testing only with fake data. Before launch, your developer should test with small real payments on every network you plan to support.
- Ignoring fees. Providers charge transaction fees, and your pricing should account for them so you do not lose money on small sales.
- Launching without a support plan. If a payment fails at 9 pm on a Friday, someone needs to know how to check it.
Questions to ask your developer
Before you agree to any work, ask these questions. A good developer will answer them clearly.
- Which networks and payment options will the app support at launch, and can more be added later?
- Will you use a direct integration or a gateway, and why?
- Where will the API keys be stored?
- What happens if a customer pays but the app loses its connection?
- How will I see a list of all transactions, and can I export it?
- Who handles the approval process with the provider, and how long does it usually take?
- What happens if the provider changes its system after launch?
- Do you offer support after the app goes live?
Getting it right the first time
Mobile money is one of the best ways to help Ghanaian customers pay you, but only when it is built carefully. Clear payment statuses, secure server checks and honest testing matter more than a fancy screen. Work with a developer who understands MoMo, Hubtel and the realities of Ghanaian payments, and who will still be there after launch to fix problems.
G+ Interactive is a software company on UPSA Road in Accra. We build mobile apps for iOS and Android, websites and custom business software, including MoMo and Hubtel payments, and we provide support after launch. If you want a clear plan for your app's payments, request a call and we will talk through your options. You can also call us on +233 59 549 4113 or write to support@gplusinteractive.com.
